Definitions..

Work life balance in HRM is implementing policies and practices which support employees in managing their professional life and personal life effectively. the main focus is to have health, encouragement and productive workforce. 


Work life balance refers an aspect of employee well- being related to the employees' ability to manage personal responsibilities and professional responsibilities with adequate time for rest and leisure. This includes flexible work arrangement, encouraging time off, and fostering culture which increase productivity and employee well-beings.

Work life balance is an employees' capacity to handle  personal and professional commitments while having enough time for rest and relaxation.

 



It is also a method of helping employees to balance their personal and professional life in an organization.

 
The importance of work life balance


It is an important way in the organization as it helps employees motivate and increase the productivity. Most of the employees who are working on a job in an organization may have an extremely time consuming duty. so they are hectic at their offices around the clock. Sometimes even on weekends. Most of the time the employees have very little time to spend with their family members because of the high pressure of work load given by the company resulting family members get neglected. And also, stress jobs bring different heath issues causing them ill. That is why work life balance came into the picture. Actually, It allows employees to maintain a fair balance of their professional and personal matters. With a good balance, employees can have a quality work life. 


Steps to improve work life balance

1. Creating a work leisure plan
Where an individual has to schedule his tasks, and divide time appropriately so that he has allocated appropriate time to his work and his career development goals and at the same time allotted time for leisure and personal development. Employees also use a compressed work week plan to build a balance.

 

2. Outsourcing and Delegating work
Delegate or outsource time consuming work to other individuals. It serves two purposes, first the work gets done and the other is person can focus on other things which may align more with skills and knowledge and may be less stressful.

 

3.  Set enough time for relaxation
Relaxation provides better work life balance, and tends to improve productivity on the professional or the work front along with providing ample scope to develop the life part of the balance.

 

4. Leaving out activities that waste time and energy
Individual should judiciously avoid wasteful activities which demand large time and energy and in return not produce output for either the work life or the leisure life.

 

5. Prioritizing work
Often employees do not give priority to work and end up doing a lot of work at the last minute. Better planning can help employees save unnecessary time delays, which can be utilized by employees for personal work.

Why we need work life balance ?

When we are stressed or overworked, we run the risk of jeopardizing more than our social lives. Our physical and mental health will also be in danger. Work life balance is needed to maintain well-being, prevent burnout and reduce stress. however, It becomes crucial during the period of high stress, personal life changes or when feeling like overwhelming,  ensuring a sustainable fulfilling life.

   

Enhanced employee productivity and satisfaction: 
When employees can maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life, they are more likely to be engaged and satisfied in their roles. This satisfaction translates into increased productivity, creativity, and a positive work atmosphere.

Health and well-being of employees:
Chronic stress and long working hours at large companies can contribute to health issues among employees. Small businesses often have limited resources to cover absent employees, making it essential to prioritize employee well-being to prevent health-related absences and maintain a productive workforce.

Reduced burnout and turnover:
Small businesses often operate with lean teams, making it crucial to retain skilled employees. A poor work-life balance can lead to burnout, exhaustion, and increased turnover rates. Maintaining a work-life balance benefits and helps in retaining valuable talent, and reducing recruitment and training costs.

A well-rested and balanced workforce is more likely to bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. Creativity often thrives in an environment where employees have the mental space to think beyond immediate work pressures.

Employees who are stressed or overworked may find it challenging to provide excellent customer service. A balanced work-life allows employees to focus on their tasks and interact with customers more positively, contributing to customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Achieving work-life balance often involves implementing flexible schedules and work arrangements. Small businesses that offer flexibility in working hours or remote work options are better positioned to attract a diverse workforce and adapt to changing work trends.

Small businesses are increasingly being evaluated not just on their products or services but also on their workplace culture. A commitment to work-life balance contributes positively to the employer brand, making it an attractive place for skilled professionals to work.

Many countries have regulations governing working hours and employee rights to paid time. Ensuring a healthy work-life balance helps small businesses comply with labor laws, reducing the risk of legal issues and associated penalties. 

Conclusion 
Work-life balance is not just a personal concern but a strategic imperative for small businesses. Prioritizing the well-being of employees not only enhances the overall work environment but also contributes to long-term success, sustainability, and growth.
