Employee Motivation



Employee motivation is an important tool which increases the enthusiasm, energy, commitment and creativity of the employees towards achieving organizational goals. It is combination of internal and external factors which influence an employees' willingness to work hard and work effectively.

The importance of the motivation

Motivation contributes to higher quality work, better customer service and reduced turn over rates.

Motivated employees are more productive, engage, and willing to stay with the organization.


Key aspects of employee motivation

Intrinsic motivation: Intrinsic motivation is driven by internal factors such as job satisfaction a sense of accomplishment, curiosity and challenge etc.

Extrinsic motivation: Extrinsic motivation is driven by external factors such as salary, bonus, recognition, promotion, avoiding punishment.

Why should employee be motivated

Employee motivation is very important for an organization in order to achieve its goals. Motivation really increases the productivity of the employees and the employees work harder and focus on their task. And also it reduces the employee absenteeism as they feel valued and engagement.

Motivated employees are also stay with the organization, reducing turn over cost and improving the stability of the organization. And the motivation is very important to enhance the company reputation as the motivated employee always can influence the customer positively to have a strong brand reputation. Moreover it helps increase the profitability of the organization as the increased productivity and reduced cost associate with absenteeism and turn over can lead to greater productivity.

How to motivate employees

There are a lot of strategical ways can be used to motivate the employees in an organization. Among them I would like to mention some of them as follows.

  1. Create a positive work environment
  2. Provide clear goals and expectations 
  3. Offer opportunities for growth and development
  4. Recognized and reward achievements
  5. Empower employees with autonomy decision making authority

Organization motivation theories

In organization settings, various motivation theories are being used in order to motivate the employees.

  1. Maslow'S Hierarchy of needs

        It refers that the employees are motivated by a hierarchy of needs sharing basic human needs such as food, water, shelter. Then it refers safety, belonging, esteem and self actualization.

    2. Herzberg's two factor theory


   This refers that the job satisfaction and dissatisfaction are influenced by hygiene factors and motivator factors like recognition and achievement.


    3. Alderfer's ERG theory

    This theory expands on Maslow's hierarchy, categorizing into three factors

E    Existence (Basic needs and safety)
R    Relatedness (social)
G    Growth (self esteem and self actualization)


    4. Equity Theory


    
    This theory suggests that the employees are motivated by a sense of fairness, comparing there inputs and their outcomes.


    5. Goal setting theory



    This theory emphasizes the importance of setting specific attainable goals in order to increase performance and motivation.

Giving explanation on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors I have explained how to motivate employees in a perfect manner. Finally the theories to motivate the employees which is used by organizations play a pivotal role in motivating employees.
